A happy encounter at a family gathering [View all]

Every year we host a post-xmas party for family and a few friends. We eat a lot and play cards and talk. This year, the invitation included a "no politics" clause because one set of cousins are trumpettes. This year, too, our company included a cousin and her family whom we rarely see--she is the product of a liaison between my father-in-law and a student and there are people who still don't know about her--and as they were getting ready to leave, I spoke to her alone and asked her if she and her daughter would like pussy hats (I knit them constantly and have given away at least 60) and to my delight she really really wanted them. When she wore one back into the room with the rest of the crowd, one of the wives of a trumper cousin said *she'd* like one, too! Two more sidled up to me and asked for hats, which they stuck in their pockets so their husbands wouldn't see.

A successful "no politics" party!
