Of course, a mere Democratic majority is no guarantee that we can stop bad nominees. Gorsuch got some Democratic votes. We need a Democratic majority plus a tougher attitude by the Democratic caucus.
The map is so bad that there's no realistic chance of a big Democratic win. The most wildly optimistic but still not ludicrous forecast would be that we hold all current seats and flip NV, AZ, TX, and TN. That requires a lot of things to go right and still gives us only 53 seats, so we couldn't afford many defections. Some of Trump's bad nominees probably would attract defectors, who are trying too hard to appear bipartisan.
