...I remind him that you get what you pay for. Even something as simple as trash pickup - that's included in our taxes, as is the school system, fire department, police department, road maintenance, etc. He shakes his head and says, "didn't think of that"
What it comes down to is what people want and how much they're willing to pay.
BTW, different states have different criteria for property taxes - here we pay a certain rate based on 70% of the assessed value of our houses. Some towns charge based on 100% and, unfortunately some towns, rather than raise the tax "rate", raise the assessed value of property.

I wish people like Oprah, Hillary, Gore, Biden would run against the 'firm' GOP seats in all states.

The NYC metropolitan area is what drives the average up. Upstate and Central NY are reasonable.

The top income tax rate is about 9%, but that wouldn't be the rate paid by retirees, it's....

It depends on where you are. The rate in Lake George is 1.5%, Syracuse 2.7%.....
