He said the most hateful things to his family. It still hurts, even though on an intellectual level I know it wasn't truly my father that was spewing such terrible words, it's hard to push down the emotions.

I see similar symptoms in Trump's racist remarks, the sexual innuendos, the petty name calling and the constant need for confirmation of his perceived greatness. He has a long history of this behavior, but in the past he at least understood he had to hide his true nature and that's no longer the case. Ne thinks he is so powerful now that he can let fly and reveal his hidden character without any risk to himself.
