Whenever we stray from what we do best, which is described at the base of the Statue of Liberty, it becomes a dark day in our history.
When the ship, the Saint Louis, set sail to our shores from Germany during the holocaust, and we turned those refugees away, sending them back to certain death at the hands of the Nazis, we have regretted that decision ever since.
Bigotry and racism during our history are the worst parts of the American story. Slavery, the trail of tears, the Chinese exclusion acts, immigration quotas against Southern Europeans in 1924 (that one was aimed at my ancestors), the barriers built to keep Jews from escaping the Nazi menace, the internment of Japanese Americans following Pearl Harbor, Jim Crow laws and I'm sure I'm missing a few. But now, after all those disgraceful episodes in our history, the President of the United States is Donald Trump. Let that sink in. It's fucking 2018. We have had disgraceful, regrettable historical times in our history and what we've learned, as a nation, has brought us this embarrassing, disgusting, racist, incompetent piece of shit to the White House. Have we learned nothing in this 242 year experiment?
I am embarrassed for my country, my fellow citizens and myself.
