For me, charter schools are just an excuse to ignore teachers' unions and the working conditions and rights of teachers. And I don't think a person can run as a Democrat while advocating for organizations that do not recognize unions like teachers' unions or the rights of employees. Charter schools are notorious in this respect.
Other than a brief period working as a substitute, I never taught school, but when I was in college, I took the education courses to prepare to teach. Some charter schools hire teachers who do not have teaching certificates because they didn't take the education courses. I was very impressed by what I learned in those courses and would not want children to be taught by "teachers" who did not take the courses. Knowing how students learn is essential to being a good teacher. So is understanding child development.
I wouldn't want an accountant who had not studied arithmetic. I don't want teachers who haven't studied education.
And I won't vote for a person who calls him- or herself a Democrat but doesn't support unions including the Teachers' Union.
