At least with regard to the big box stores, i think Moose has a point. I have NEVER, even during the holidays, seen more than a third of a registers open. Wal-Mart, Target, what used to be K Mart. 28 registers and 4 to 8 open. Take six people away and who makes sure that everything was properly paid for. 6 people at a kiosk near the front door.
Where do you shop that the population of cashiers is so plentiful? Sure don't see that around here.

A couple of days ago, Target tried to push people to self-serve, cashier lines looked like Wal*Mart!

Lowes pulled that shit with me. I had a load and no cashiers. I did a cargo drop and walked out!

My local Neighborhood Walmart has 100% self-checkout. There is a scanner built into the checkout
