Melania was an immigrant from a modest background who had nothing remotely close to a modeling income that could support paying for her lifestyle at the time. There's also no question that she was at least at some level a sex worker, given the material she was being paid to produce. There's also a cottage industry of Manhattan immigrant "models" who aren't really models, so it just isn't that big of a stretch to believe she was a working prostitute at some point. However, regardless of whether this was true or not, if the DailyMail couldn't prove it, they were leaving themselves open to a libel suit, much like Liberace in the 50's.

Like most tabloids, the DailyMail uses dubious sources and anything they print should be suspect, but it doesn't mean it isn't true either.
