And they probably feel their version of desperate fear.

But they don't fear the dread specter of being reduced to having to live "normal" lives in decent normal tract homes, going to work at decent normal jobs each day, buying clothes off the rack and using the main terminals at airports on the rare occasions they fly anywhere.

They can't even begin to imagine that, of course, much less fear it, and that fear at very least is what I wish for them. As it is, even after any prison sentences, they know they'll go back to versions of their former lives, just minus some prize invitations.

Oh, well, no doubt their sadness and desperation are real anyway.
