rose through the ranks, since a lot of those depend on getting beyond the ranking commander to go up the chain.

He didn't need to openly attack people to have a detrimental effect on their lives.

I've met racist and sexist Generals and other officers over 20 odd years on various army posts.

Sure, they're political animals and mindful of their words and behavior - around the public.
