that Manafort was so broke due to the Russian sanctions that he couldn't get his money through his usual channels in Ukraine where he was working and making big bucks and Russian friends. Even his daughters were commenting on how "cheap he suddenly had become". He worked for free as an "investment" in his future earnings since he had nothing to lose. If he got the trust of the moron he could influence him and get sanctions lifted eventually, freeing up his money.
