13. To expect any Mental Health Professional to predict the future is unrealistic.

Any exam at any given time is a snap shot of that persons moment. Sure you can look at history and extrapolate all kinds of possibilities. The professionals follow a protocol as do the police. If he wasn't presenting as a danger to himself or others there was nothing that could be done under the law. There are many people with those diagnoses who do not go on to commit crimes just as there are some people with no psychiatric histories who murder.

It is frustrating that this such a grey area but short of locking up everyone who reports violent thoughts what would you have the system do?

What the system can do is remove machines that are specifically made to kill large numbers of people out of the hands of the citizens. If you want to go shoot an automatic weapon go check one out at a gun range and have at it. There is no reason to have them floating around the community.
