In the 90's - before 9/11 and passport requirements - I used to visit the US at least once a year (shopping, skiing, vacations) and no matter who I travelled with, we all said the same thing - once we crossed the border back into Canada, it was like a big sigh of relief - like you didn't even know you were holding your breath. It wasn't just because we were glad to be back in our home country - in the back of all our minds was the whole gun thing. We were exceedingly polite to people on the freeway, in the store, etc. Now maybe not all Canadians think this way, but the ones I travelled with did (that comprised of high school students, teachers, friends, family). There must be some kind of undercurrent of fear within a society where people can conceal weapons, imo.
