(21,070 posts)44. The entire song is about the symbolism of the flag over Fort McHenry.
The lyrics (written in 1814 by an American detainee witnessing the battle and set to the tune of a popular drinking song) celebrate our fledgling republic's victory in a war whose purpose was to once again colonize our land and people. There is nothing militaristic or war mongering about them.
