In reply to the discussion: how would a Clinton presidency look right now? [View all]Hortensis
(58,785 posts)87. Inconvenient too: 1. Florida's a swing state with a closed primary,
so Republicans who're energized by hostility and fear to try to defeat Democrats in the primary (because their party produces no one good to vote for) register Democrat.
2. Florida has an especially large number of "Reagan Democrats," who always vote Republican for president. These older and/or working class whites have an especially huge problem with Democratic positions on social and racial issues, but also on economic.
This quote from Barney Bishop, an ex- executive director of the Florida Democratic Party, kind of illustrates both. We all know bigotry is a huge factor in the right's animus toward our social programs:
"Obamacare is an unmitigated disaster. It has been from the beginning. Any time that Congress passes something along strictly partisan lines, it probably is not a good thing. ... But Nanny Government knows best."
The rest of Mr. Bishop's old article's just the usual Republican lies heard all too often from our conservative Democrats, including right here on DU.
Btw, most of these people were already extremely angry that we elected Obama even before we nominated a strong, liberal woman for POTUS, and there's some question as to whether those who went to the White Nationalist Party in 2016 will come back. I hope they do not! They dishonor our party and muddy our message, confusing a lot more people than just you about who we are and what we're for.
