See my previous post about my parents lovely neighborhood. Animal abuse was typical. Neighbors would leave dogs tied to trees and posts, no shelter, no water. If you actually tried to help the animal, they would either attack you or give you the "mind your own fucking business and it's my fucking dog" speech. As we were finally cleaning out my parents home, it came a horrible rain storm. I looked out the back, and a neighbor had a dog tied to a tree. The dog sat in the rain, looking despondent and sad. In our back yard was an old dog house, left over from one of our pets. We were selling and leaving, and I took a chance. I went out back, knocked on the neighbors door and explained we were leaving and I would give them the doghouse. I emphasized the "free" part, if it even cost a dollar they would let the dog get rained on. I dragged it over and put it where the dog could get inside. It was probably the last interaction I had there with a neighbor, and I can console myself that I tried to do what was right. But the moral of the story is the same. Move.
