AWBs try to not capture common and classic hunting and target semi-autos with detachable magazines but do capture evil black rifles like ARs and semiauto AKs. As a result of trying to thread this needle AWB focus on things like bayonet lugs and flash suppressors instead of detachable magazines. You end up with laws that allow the Lanza family to legally own the AR that their son used to slaughter children at a school even though Connecticut had a state AWB that was equivalent to the federal one that expired. If you think AWBs work, then you have to be ok with massacres like Sandy Hook.

Australia had few mass killings prior to 1996 and has had mass shootings since the forced gun confiscation. They also had mass killers use other means like arson and vehicles.
