(8,646 posts)In some places, where there is a shortage of ice, yearly costs can be quite high. If you have more than 1 kid it's out of reach. I'm a single mom who is in school full time and I'm thankful I have girls who don't give a crap about ice hockey (although it makes me sad, I always wanted to be a hockey mom, lol but at least one of them plays floor hockey through school) because there's no way I could afford to even register one of them in hockey. As it was, they were in dance last year and they won't be this year - too much $$.
By the way, my parents spent thousands and thousands every year on my brother's hockey. It's not too expensive until you get to higher levels and teams are chartering buses and you are travelling all over going to junior A tryouts, AAA championships, and spending your summer in hotel rooms, and needing $400 (in the 90's) skates every 6 months and breaking $50 sticks every few days (such is the life of a defenseman with a kick ass slapshot).
Also in more remote areas, it's not unusual to spend thousands in hotels and gas every year just to be able to play other towns.
Street hockey is, of course, available to everyone.
