The ratings for the opening ceremonies were higher than any opening ceremony not held in the US, and the ratings for Sunday night were higher than any opening Sunday other than LA in '84 or Atlanta in '96. So people are still interested in the coverage that NBC provides, even with the results being readily available in advance and the sometimes exasperating segments about back stories.

I think the reason they remain popular in spite of such things is that a lot of people take pleasure in watching them as a community event. Also, it seems many people actually like the human interest segments. I think they're hit and miss, personally--so my solution will be to use the DVR, give the broadcast a head start while I catch up on other things, and then fast forward through commercials and those non-competitive segments that don't interest me.
