During each election year for the past decade, I've attended my local Democratic Party Precinct Caucus, followed the next month by my State Senate District Convention.

At the caucus, people introduce resolutions recommending planks for the party platform. Those that gain enough support in the local State Senate District Convention are sent up to the Congressional District Convention, then perhaps to the State Convention, and ultimately, perhaps even to the Democratic National Convention.

Our little caucus has never failed to propose and endorse a plank for these LGBT rights, and our State Senate District Convention has always approved them by overwhelming vote. The same has been happening in thousands and thousands of small party meetings nationwide, for years.

All I'm sayin' is, it pays to go to meetin's. Rights are never handed down to the people from on high. They are won by the people, working from the ground up, uniting and combining their voices until their leaders can no longer ignore them.

And this is a moment to savor.
