18. Many years ago, when I was about 1 year old

my mother had me in a playpen in the front yard

People did not lock their doors back then where we were.

A rabid fox came along and was trying to get me.
Our young fox terrier dog who loved to sit outside my pen and let me pull her tail
stepped in and fought the fox.
My mother heard the commotion and got me.
Our dog broke the fox's leg and tore off it's tail
That slowed the fox and allowed to police to catch up to the fox and shoot it.

The fox had got 15 other dogs that morning. And they all had to be put down.
Our dog was written up in the paper and effectively on death row.
Some young vet read the story, called and asked if he could try a new vaccine on her.
After six months in quarantine in our basement where we visited her wearing special hospital clothes and gloves to prevent contamination, she survived and lived a full 16 year life.
