In reply to the discussion: I'm more offended how badly Michelle Wolf sucks as a comedian than I am the content of her jokes [View all]The Velveteen Ocelot
(131,313 posts)Others obviously did think she was funny. And when I read the transcript the next day, at least some of the jokes seemed funnier than when she delivered them. Maybe I found her style too off-putting to enjoy the jokes (and her voice is awful), and I did find some of them to be mean-spirited and crude. But that really isn't the point. The point is that if the purpose of the WHCD is to celebrate the First Amendment, a comedian, or anyone else, should feel free to be offensive and call out the president, his minions, and the press itself, because that's what the First Amendment allows us to do. The complaints (mostly by GOPers, of course) have been over her comments directed at minions Sanders and Conway, and not at the quality of the humor. While I didn't like the routine, I was disappointed that the WHCA apologized. They shouldn't have.
The WHCD has become sort of a parody of itself, though. It's become a high-falutin' celebrity gathering where the main event is a comedy routine in which a comedian roasts various important people and is then criticized for it. Maybe they should just go back to being a dinner for industry folks where they award scholarships to students and say nice things about each other, then go back to work.
