frankly i think the media is irresponsible to dismiss third-party candidates as much as they do, but there's no good argument to have treated donnie any better, especially if the prevailing wisdom is that donnie wasn't going to win. that's exactly the justification they always give for almost completely ignoring and dismissing third-party candidates.

in any event, there's zero justification for giving donnie a wildly disproportionate amount of airtime. if hillary was the heavy favorite to become president, then her policy positions should have been considered far more newsworthy than donnie's idiocies like the wall, which dominated news coverage.
