In reply to the discussion: Quit saying "white people" [View all]Bucky
(53,998 posts)64. Among other problems, it's not strictly accurate
I suppose you could be a wag and argue that white is the absence of color. But that's only true if you're talking about the science of light refraction, not if you're talking about people. In common language white is a color. And the legal phrase "race, creed, or color" applies equally to people of white and people of color.
If someone holds up a typical sheet of copier paper and asks "What color is this?" you would say "it is white" no? But then, if someone held up a typical Caucasian and said "What color is this?" then you'd probably say tan or pink, depending on the season and assuming it isn't George Hamilton. So in reality, there is no such thing as a person of non color.
My point is, you shouldn't hold people up.

It's pinkish in some places, more tannish in others. And then there's all those freckles

What if you get rid of the "white" — no, wait, hear me out — and add "from Pasadena"?

I have a feeling ME or GrandME as I call her wouldn't be too happy about all this tribalism

Why should it be my task? I'm not the one pushing literacy correctness, since language is dynamic.

I have lost track of what we call any race without offending someone these days.
