8. IMO, this isn't really about ending the probe.

They know they can't.

This is about shoring up support with the base to blunt the effects of the reports when they come.

They probably know that Mueller will not attempt to indict Trump, so it comes down to the political process of impeachment. If they can convince enough for the Republicans that this is a political witch hunt, then they can get support out to the polls in November, and prevent any GOP Senators from supporting conviction.

The thing is, I think that plan will likely work.

The question is, will the REST of us hold the Republicans accountable for their flagrant disregard for the rule of law.
