(82,849 posts)My latest peeve is the haste with which popular music becomes commercial jingles. Years ago, Nike wanted to use the Beatles song "Revolution" for an advertising campaign, even cut and aired some commercials. Apple Records got in touch with Phil Knight and told him to knock it off. Knight dug in his heels, and insisted that if he could just sit down and talk with them, the Beatles would see it his way. You know, we can work it out.
Paul, George and Ringo said, no, life is very short and there's no time for this shit. Knock it off, for reals. And Nike backed down.
Nowadays I can hear a song in rotation on the local pop music station, then hear that same song on TV hawking Jeeps, Cadillacs, Crestor, and other products. The concept of "selling out" has now become a badge of honor rather than shame.
