Sounds like you've been in the trenches and over the top too; you could write a book (if you haven't). There's a lot of history there.
Regarding the greed/regulation issue, I heard a simple phrase a couple of years ago that has stuck with me. It applies here and anytime people complain about regulation: "Capital will always outrun regulation". Greed moves in, extracts what it can and moves on (if necessary) long before any negative outcomes can be controlled. Regulation has to be in place and adjusted as necessary because it will never win that race.
