229. I watch cooking competition shows and "show us your passion" is big.

Compared to shows from the UK, Australia/NZ, and Canada, that are actually about the food and people are nice, the American ones are obnoxiously centered on conflict and too much sexism.

Americans come off as big selfish angry babies who think they deserve anything they want just because they want it badly. It's all "I deserve to win this because I want it the most, I have the most passion," and "I didn't come here to make friends, I came to win." And they all have sob stories, even if the only sob story is that their elderly grandmother in Italy that they haven't seen for twenty years is dying -- they have to win in order to pay for the ticket over there to say goodbye! Or their mother died, they say, weeping. When did she die? Oh, fifteen yeas ago, but it's been hard for me! My cat died four years ago, I'm still devastated! And yet I watch this crap sometimes... Purely for anthropological reasons don't you know.
