In 1993, Romney was thinking about entering politics, both at Ann's urging and to follow in his father's footsteps. Romney changed his affiliation to Republican in October 1993 and formally announced his candidacy for the Senate in February 1994. He lost to incumbent Ted Kennedy. When Romney claimed to be pro-choice (yes, he did) Ted said, "Mitt isn't pro-choice, he's multiple choice."
In his 2002 Massachusetts Gubernatorial campaign, he played down his party affiliation, claiming he was "not a partisan Republican" but rather a "moderate" with "progressive" views. He won the election with dirty, false ads, lies and, of course, money. Providing health care for all in Massachusetts was extremely popular and, again, politically expedient. He was a one-term governor. Instead of another term, he ran for president.
