(11,767 posts)History has taught that when you are the most powerful nation, you can certainly have allies, and good ones at that, but the reality of the world is that countries are often looking at things from their own self interest. When Great Britain was the indispensable empire, she had allies in France, Russia, etc... and they fought along side her in wars, but when there was an opportunity to grow or get something at the expense of the Empire, those countries took their small part. The US surpassed Britain during the time after WWI and certainly after the devastation of WW2. The US Dollar became the global currency standard replacing the Pound and the US became the global financial leader. We have rivals like China and India, and enemies like Russia, but we also have allies like France, Britain, etc... who would like to see their currency become the global reserve currency and if the US is digging its own grave, none of those countries are going to sacrifice their own interests to save the US.
