Anecdotal - but telling, nonetheless [View all]

As an avid knitter/crocheter, I participate on a number of websites devoted to the crafts.

One of them occasionally has discussion threads about politics, and a large swath of posters (mostly older white women) declared themselves Trump devotees from the time he took office. They invariably say the same thing when anyone posts an anti-Trump comment: “Stop complaining! Everything is going great and he’s accomplishing so much!”

Well, two days ago, someone started a discussion with the question: ”If you are a Trump supporter, can you tell us what it is you believe he’s accomplished as president?”

The responses were as follows: ”That’s none of your business.” “You have no right to ask anyone that.” “I don’t have to tell you.” “Why do you want to know?” “I have better things to do with my time.”

All of the responses from the pro-Trumpers were like that. Not a single poster was able to come up with a single positive thing to brag about – and they all got extremely angry/defensive about even being asked the question.

I couldn’t help but think of how I would have responded to a similar question while Obama was in office – and how I would have had literally dozens of things to point to, in terms of his achievements.

I think the Trumpsters’ reaction is telling. They want desperately to believe that their idol is delivering on his “MAGA agenda” – but they’re beginning to realize that when pressed for details, they can’t come up with anything, simply because there’s no “there” there.

I know that several of the people who weighed-in are FOX-News enthusiasts, but even they couldn’t come up with anything to say, despite being bombarded with pro-Trump propaganda on a daily basis. No one mentioned their “massive tax cut”, because they’re middle-class folk who literally got nothing. No one mentioned getting a better job or a raise thanks to the tax cuts given to their employers. No one spoke about feeling safer because those “criminal immigrants” are being deported.

I believe there are people out there who are beginning to realize that things are not exactly as advertised. As with most Republicans, they usually regurgitate what party leaders are telling them – but they couldn’t even go that route.

I liken it to a local hangout. People gathered at the Trump Bar & Grill, high-fiving each other over their “win”. They were ecstatic about the idea that “certain people” were told they weren’t welcome, and toasted to the better days ahead they were promised.

But after a while, just as with all such suddenly-popular hangouts, the patrons are starting to realize that the quality of the food is sub-par, the drinks are watered-down, the wait staff is rude and incompetent, and the prices keep going up to the point where they can’t afford to “hang with the crowd” after all.

The promised “huge tax cuts” for middle-class Americans never materialized, the Mexico-funded border wall never materialized, and the Make America Great Again agenda has turned out to be nothing more than a bunch of made-in-China hats and tees that fade with every wash-‘n-wear news cycle.

Republican voters are stupid – that goes without saying. But even the dumbest of the dumb tend to wake up when the shit hits the fan when that fan happens to be located in their own home, and their own pockets are full of nothing but bullshit promises.

Patience, my friends. When staunch Trumpsters can’t point to a single accomplishment their Messiah has allegedly achieved, it’s an unmistakable sign that they’re starting to question whether their own loyalty was misplaced, and their own party has sold them a worthless bill of goods.

Republican voters don’t care that the wealthy got tax cuts – they only care that they didn’t get one. Republican voters don’t care if their “pResident” is an idiot – they only care if his idiocy affects them personally. Republican voters don’t care if Trump spends his time golfing and tweeting covfefe – they only care when the bullshit hits them right between the eyes – and it’s beginning to.

As I said up front, this is based on anecdotal evidence. But it’s that on-the-ground evidence that gives me hope that Republican voters – as dumb as they have proven themselves to be – may not be the complacent sheep their party has counted on.

Let’s remember that if you can talk Evangelicals into believing that a pussy-grabbing adulterer is a model Christian ordained by God to rule a nation, you are dealing with sheep who can be just as equally manipulated into turning against him.

And at this juncture, the powers-that-be in the GOP are no doubt preparing the talking points aimed at doing exactly that. Trump is a liability that the Republicans don’t want weighing them down going into the general election in 2020 – a campaign cycle that will begin the minute the 2018 midterms are over – which means it’s time to “adjust the message” in order to promote a more suitable, God-fearing Christian like Mike Pence to lead the flock to electoral victory.

The Emperor’s new clothes are coming apart at the seams, and those who once believed his wardrobe was impenetrable are – slowly, but surely – realizing that his teeny-tiny dick, now exposed for all to see, is just as flaccid and disappointing as his promises.
