(4,033 posts)31. My maternal grandfather came here in 1890...
I saw the manifest of the ship he got off of in Baltimore. He was with his mother and it had him listed as 2 or 3 years old. It also listed where they were headed, which was Buffalo.
My Paternal Great grandfather came here from Ireland around 1855, he was about 5. He came here for economic reasons with his parents (Potato Famine), just like many of those from south of the border are doing today. He wasn't taken from his parents.
My Paternal grandmother came here from Ireland around 1900, she was 10, she wasn't taken from her parents.

True, 3 of my 4 grandparents were born in Ireland and came to this country as kids.
