You are correct that the term "civil disobedience" is improperly applied here, but the man was willing to accept the consequences. If those punks were making jokes about lynching, I can understand why this happened. I would not use the same method, but I understand why he did what he did.

On the other hand, if it was just about the hat, then there is no sympathy for him.
