Yet, where the Republicans usually used surrogates they could disavow, Reid is a major Democrat. The difference is that what Reid is saying is almost certainly true - someone did TELL him that Romney paid no taxes. Reid never said he had personal knowledge of that. What is clear from Romney's IRA and Cayman Islands and Swiss accounts is that Romney is not being straight in saying that he did not avoid taxes. He clearly did using aggressive methods. This is NOT to say he did anything illegal, but the bar here when running for President is not "illegal", but whether people see it as sneaky or unseemly for a President.
The Republicans are over reacting in their outrage - to an audience of moderates in the middle who are independent who certainly remember that President Bush's Texas moneymen funded the SBVT to lie about John Kerry's real heroism and sacrifice as a young man and have seen some people who are elected officials in the Republican party continue to question Obama's birth certificate although there was NEVER any basis to question where he was born.
