"When did you stop beating your wife?" has no direct answer to the question which isn't damning. Romney could theoretically have an answer this this question by releasing his tax returns showing the contrary. The beauty of this is that, now, as long as Romney continues to withhold them, it allows people to assume that "what Harry heard" may just be true. There has been a "what's he hiding?" question ever since Romney said he wasn't releasing his returns. Romney obviously calculated that whatever was in his returns must have been worse than any damage this speculation would cause. Harry flipped the whole thing on its ear. Now the speculation is very specific and terrible for Romney, making the tradeoff that much more difficult. Politics ain't beanbag.
