In reply to the discussion: Some hard truths for Trump Republicans: [View all]Grammy23
(6,124 posts)26. So right, Major. tRump never met a bigotry he was not willing to exploit.
So we see him do & say things that no other US politician has been able to use as effectively as tRump. True, he will certainly not attract a huge majority of this country but he will find enough to keep him afloat. It is disgusting to many of us see him mimic and mock a man with visible physical problems, deny ever meeting the man and then deny he was mocking him. It reminds me of when I was in school and a bully would make fun of someone in the class. Yes, some people didnt like it, but the bully could always count on getting a snicker or outright laugh out of some of the class. The teacher could admonish the bully but rarely said a word to those who laughed or encouraged the bully.
So it is with tRump. He attracts a certain type of personality to his rallies who clearly enjoy his theatrics. He puts on a good show as the saying goes. And anyone who dares to protest his cruelty becomes the next target. So even if there are horrified attendees, they keep quiet and never utter a peep, lest tRump and the crowd (with tRumps encouragement) target them. He directs them to respond with contempt and disrespect and they are happy to comply.
It is disheartening to see him continue to hold on to the supporters he has because it reveals a really ugly truth about our citizenry. Racial discrimination, gender bias, denigration of anyone tRump deems ugly or imperfect is promoted by tRump and his followers eat it up. It never occurs to any of them that if he can violate norms of civilized behavior against one group, he can do the same to another. And the next time it might be them in the crosshairs of his cruelty.
We are on a dangerous path and tRump has a lot of enablers, including key members of Congress and a significant majority of his party. I have my hands in front of my eyes (figuratively) fearing what I see playing out ever day. I feel pretty bleak about the future but have a tiny spark of hope that there are more of us than there are of them and maybe we can join together, speak up and stop tRump/Putin in order to save us.
