that trade wars are easy to win!

I'd put up the sarcasm thingy, but that's not quite right. Is there one for total disgust?

I know that I know very little about trade, especially international trade, and even less about tariffs and how they affect things.

I do have a vague recollection from U.S. history or trade wars early in our country, that were very bad for us. I don't recall any details, and don't feel like doing any on line research. I suppose that completely unfettered free trade isn't the best thing either, but simply imposing tariffs willy-nilly is truly dumb.
