Yes Murdoch is a horrible greedy shit, but America (like most wealthy nations) used to guard against any one person controlling a narrative through the Fairness Act, in place since 1949. Broadcasters had to make a fair representation of all sides in all political debates. Presenting one-sided opinion pieces without rebuttal was specifically barred.

Once the GOP eliminated this rule under Reagan up sprang the hate machines of the far right on radio and tv. Murdoch was merely taking advantage an opening deliberately created by Republicans.
