Michael Brown's mother announces run for Ferguson City Council [View all]
Lezley McSpadden, the mother of Michael Brown, announced Friday that she is running for a seat on the Ferguson, Mo., City Council.
McSpadden made the announcement almost four years to the day her son was shot and killed by a white police officer in 2014, an incident that triggered mass protests across the country and served as a major catalyst for the Black Lives Matter movement.
"Almost four years ago to this day, I ran down this very street, and my son was covered in a sheet," McSpadden said in announcing her campaign near the exact spot where her son died, NBC News reported. "I learned to walk again, and this is one of my first steps."
McSpadden said she will focus on policing within the community, economic equality and healthcare during her campaign.
