(14,802 posts)an alcohol recovery program. I sponsored them through their prison time and one died there. As you say, it's rough as hell on everyone, especially the families - and very expensive for them. It's also pure hell for prisoners that have health problems.
Sending books and magazines is usually by approval only and the books go into the library - and cannot have any metal staples. All goods had to be shipped from a company, not individuals (to prevent contraband).
The prison visits were quite a shocking and emotional experience. One time, we visited in an open outdoor yard where we could smoke and talk in private, and the guy I was visiting kissed a little tree in the yard. That's how isolated he had been. That same guy also got on his knees and kissed the ground outside the gate on the day he was released, when I went to pick him up.
Sure taught me to avoid getting locked up at any cost.....
