It was about possible Russian interference in the 2016 election.
But the asshole, from day 1, made it about himself because A) that's what a narcissist does, and B) since he knew better than anyone that he was implicated he knew it would end up centering on him.

Enjoy the trip Donald. There is nowhere to go but down from here.
