(10,857 posts)Hell, I wish more American olympians would adopt another country and bring it along for the ride. We have an embarrassment of talent in a big, big world.
Why can't an American concerned with deforestation in Papua New Guinea say she's running for them, too, and display their flag if she medals?
We are a people made of other peoples, and that is what makes us so damned cool.
I will also point out that the display of the American flag in the current fashion goes against the spirit and possibly the letter of our ridiculous flag laws, particularly the US Code Title 36 Chapter 10 SS176 (j):
(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

So be sure to have that at the ready for the knuckledraggers. Displaying the American flag in such an inappropriate manner is a desecration of our "living thing," especially it it is draped around a person like a cape or (as a certain Jamaican did with his own flag last night), wearing it as an ascot.
Our flag is not supposed to be shown in such a way at all.
