17. Give them a break, please.

Most have never worked in a situation where their differences were constantly exploited for political gain. Think about it, most people work towards a common goal on their jobs everyday. While we may know this academically to be true about congress, the vast differences in ideas are often amplified. It becomes a matter of who is "good" and who is "bad".
Also, for many people, politics are different because where one stands is usually a reflection of his/her values. There are also cultural differences at play here. Some people do not have to live with bigots (or even people with vastly different political views) in their families. Some are better at separating (compartmentalizing) the good from the bad in people because they may have more experience.
Give your fellow DUers a break, please. If you are personally feeling a loss, please accept my condolences. Ignore their outbursts, if you can.
