All Federal officials and employees take an oath [View all]

to uphold the Constitution:

I, [name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter.

They do not take an oath of loyalty to or blindly obey the leader.

I know that many here are concerned by yesterday's NYT Op-Ed that many un-elected federal officials and/or employees are not following the orders of the current elected President, calling it a coup and shadow government.

But isn't this how a democratic republic should operate. Loyalty should not be to the leader, that's how dictatorships work, but to the law, specifically our constitution.
