You can absolutely learn a lot about history, by doing genealogy.. And it is also interesting to learn how our ancestors lived their life - what they was worried about, what they cared for... And what they Don't cared to much about...
Well many of the signs about religious fanaticism from the 17th century is clear for many - but the US can still learn from its mistake, and doesn't give into it all again.. But then again, it have always been a strike in the american Psyche, who have been kept under control, until the last 30 or so year, where religion, specially the more fanatical ones, have been made more and more mainstream.. And it looks like the more extreme are being elected into office this days... It is like looking to a dark room, you do not know what is there, but you are not sure if it is good or bad.. And the light is out...
