I see many people here are very quick to shit on John Lennon and his fans.
I understand. Not everyone can grasp the concept of music having a powerful effect on peoples lives.
It's not easy for everyone to understand that many people, all over the world, who watched as the world changed after Kennedy was killed felt very alone. It's not easy to understand how one voice could have been so important to so many people. It's not easy to understand in this day and age, how important the Beatles were in a world with only radio and 3 tv channels for communication.
God help you if you were living in a conservative town, your only sane outlet was music.
It's not easy to understand in a world of Justin Biebers and Taylor Swifts that music used to be important. It used to be the place liberals could go to find out that they were not alone in the world. That there were others who believed that things didn't need to be this way.
John Lennon, and the Beatles, changed the world. They led the charge in a seismic shift of consciousness. I know that is hard to understand if you weren't there, but many off us were and for us it is real easy. His legacy has inspired generations of people. Liberals, and especially musicians. John Lennon didn't just carry the torch, the man fucking invented it. I for one will be eternally grateful to him for what he did.
You don't need to care about John Lennon, you don't need to give a shit about what he did or where things would have been without him, but you also don't need to shit on people who do and who are taking this personally. The song may not have meaning for you, but there are people out there who's lives have been made better by the music, who's lives have been literally changed by the music, and if you feel the need to shit on that, well that says much more about you than it does about the people who love John Lennon.
