(3,431 posts)Republicans have always hated ANY social program. They called Social Security "socialism" back when it was developed, and have been trying to overturn it ever since. Same with Medicare, Education, EPA...anything that pays a direct benefit to the American people as opposed to the MIC, or oil companies.
Let me see know. I guess today's worker is supposed to take a portion of their take home pay and set up their own, personal "retirement" accounts. What bill do they not pay to afford to do this? Rent? Power? Cut down on food? Medicine? Yeah, let's blow that donut hole in Medicare Part D again. These people have no idea what it's like to have bills, or what it's like to have too much month left at the end of the money.
The only mistake I'm seeing the Democrats making on this...they keep referring to how these programs help the poor. Most folks don't see themselves as "poor", struggling maybe, but not "poor". They don't think they're getting any kind of "government help". These folks need to be shown how these programs benefit them. What (I hope) most of the under 55 group is thinking right now is "Wait a minute...her SS check is the only thing that's letting Mom stay in her home." Social Security worked just fine for decades until the Repubs decided it had gone from socialism to the root of all evil. It's so REPUBLICAN of Paul Ryan to totally ignore the fact that his true god, Ayn Rand, collected Social Security & Medicare benefits. I realized what a hypocrite she was when it came to me that John Galt and his minions were setting up a commune. They're typical addicts, using whatever means necessary to regain power.
Thankfully, I can honestly say that I have NO idea how they think.
