(42,317 posts)He was stating that previous reports on Kavanaugh had shown no evidence of problematic behavior. As he said this, he rubbed his nose with his left hand. This is an indication of lying, although one has to look at the overall behavior of the person who is communicating. Interpretation of nonverbal communication is not a black and white proposition; it is better described as "holistic."
In interpersonal communication, of which I am a professor of on the college level, rubbing the nose, eyes, ears or mouth is an indication of lying. "Smell my lie, see my lie (eye), hear my lie," etc.
On another topic, Grassley is presenting poorly. First, he is reading, and not even reading very well. He stumbles over words, fails to establish eye contact, and has a speech pattern.
