I live in Arkansas - as state nearly as red as W. Va.

We used to have Democratic elected officials who routinely voted with the Republicans. What our former Democratic elected officials learned is that voting like a Republican will not buy you any votes from Republicans but it will cause Democrats to stay home.

Machin was leading in the polls before this vote. He will likely yet win, but this vote will cost him some Democratic votes and gain no Republican votes.
