I actually taught that song, introducing interpreting lyrics in poetry. "American Pie" was PERFECT in that regard. A couple of years before, I worked as a camp counselor near Woodstock N.Y (the festival was yet to come), and we used to cruise past "Big Pink" hoping to see Dylan. We only ever saw various members of his "back up band" coming and going. Of course, a few years later, they were simply known as "The Band." Lee Marvin's father lived in the area and was often seen around. Yes, WOW.. the good old days. That was the coolest area in the East back then, but little known nationally until "The Festival,' except for their summer theater.
